The Good Effort Guide To Finding Houston Food Pantries

Aside from that co-worker who always jams the copy machine and sneaks off you know what else chaps our hide?

Wrong numbers to community resources.

If you’ve ever called a Houston food pantry you know all too well what I’m talking about.

Food pantries here come and go more frequently than an East End light rail. The lack of government funding, community support or budget cuts leads to lots of food pantries shutting their doors.

While we can’t prevent Houston food pantries from closing we can provide a good effort in supplying you with the most dependable pantries in town.  And that’s exactly what we plan to do in this guide.

What Exactly Makes This A Good Effort Guide To Houston Food Pantries?

So glad you asked.

If you’ve called a listing of food pantries you’ve probably encountered LOTS of disconnected numbers.

For those that have experienced this, we feel your pain. To avoid further frustrations we’ve ONLY added viable food pantries. How do we determine whats viable and what isn’t? We use the criteria below:

  1. Must be an established Houston food pantry
  2. Must provide detailed information about the food pantry

If the food pantry doesn’t past both of these tests, it’s not listed in this guide.

Established Houston food pantry

Most of the Houston food pantries listed in this guide have been established for years.

This means they have experience, stable funding and the “know how” to make things work, even on a shoestring budget.  All of these things help to keep their doors open for years.

Note: Many of the most dependable food pantries are related to Christian Ministry groups. If you see any group that ends in “Area Ministries”  (Memorial Area Ministries, Southest Area Ministries, etc) this is a good sign that you can depend on them for anything from food pantries, clothing to rent and utility assistance.

Detailed listings only

In our experience, food pantries with no listings of a website, hours of operation or zip codes served are red flags of either a wrong number or the food pantry has closed its doors.

In this guide, we’ve excluded any food pantries who lack specific details about how they operate.

Here you will only find food pantries with at least one of the following:

  • A website
  • Hours of operation
  • Zip codes served

If you find a listing with pertinent details like those above there is a good chance that the food pantry is still operational. Worse case scenario, if the phone number is incorrect, you still have enough information to learn more about the food pantry.

If You See Something, Say Something

Before offering up our list of food pantries, we need you to take an oath. Don’t worry the oath is simple.

If you find that a listing is incorrect in this guide we ask that you tell us about it in the comments section.

If you tell us about it AND THEN comment with the correct phone number, website, zip codes, etc extra points to you sir/ma’am.

Think of this as a community guide. Because it is. If your job requires you to search for food pantries today, you’ll likely need to do the same again in the future. Correct community resources make everyone’s day easier.

Note: If you know of a dependable food pantry that is not listed you can also mention that in our comments section.

Alternatives To These Houston Food Pantries

If you had trouble finding a Houston food pantry in your area, here are a few alternative ways to find food

Houston Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels is a food delivery program for seniors 60 and older. This guide will give you a listing of each Meals on Wheels contractor.  Find the contractor who delivers to your area and contact them to sign up.

Congregate Meals in Houston

Congregate Meals is another food program for seniors 60 and older. The difference is in this program seniors must travel to a community center in their area for a meal. This guide provides you with the address and phone number of the Congregate Meal site that serves your zip code.

WIC in Houston

WIC is a program that provides free food to women, infants and children, hence the name W.I.C. If you are a new mother WIC can provide you with formula milk for your baby and vouchers to purchase healthy foods. This guide will help you to find a WIC site near your home.

SNAP in Houston

SNAP  is the new-ish name for food stamps. This program provides you with a monthly voucher to buy food from your grocery store. Unlike WIC, you can buy any food you like, whether it is considered “healthy” or not. The only exception is you cannot purchase alcohol with SNAP benefits.

Houston Food Bank

The last alternative is the Houston Food Bank. The Houston Food Bank is where many of these food pantries purchase their food from (at a discounted rate) and then give it away to the community.  Here they can help you apply for SNAP benefits or find a food pantry near you. The Houston Food Bank has a map of even more food pantries than this. If you cannot find help here, we encourage you to visit their site to look for food pantries.

Conclusion

Houston food pantries are in constant transition.

They open, close, and moving locations throughout the years. Because of this, the information on Houston food pantry listings is sometimes incorrect.

There are likely errors in this list as well, although we gave a “good effort” and combed through the website of every food pantry listed above. In addition, we also provided supplemental details like the food pantry website and zip codes served to give you a better chance at obtaining the correct information in the event you encountered a wrong number.

If you find any errors in this food pantry guide we ask that you make note of those mistakes in the comment section. If you obtain the correct phone number, address, etc, we also ask that you add that to your comment.

Searching for food pantries on a full stomach and encountering wrong numbers is exceedingly frustrating. Just imagine doing it on an empty stomach.
