If Your Car Was Towed During Imelda

If you parked your car along I-45 or any other freeway/street and your car was towed here are two ways to locate your vehicle:

  • Contact City of Houston Police Department at 713.308.8500.
  • You can also visit FindMyTowedCar.com. Simply enter details like your license plate, year and make to learn where your car was towed to.

According to Mayor Turner, the car’s that are not directly blocking traffic will be towed last. If you were able to park your car along the side of the freeway, then your vehicle will be towed last.

Long-term Houston Housing Options

Aside from spending money on a hotel, a shelter is the most immediate housing option for anyone who was displaced by the rains of Tropical Storm Imelda. The housing options in this section are considered long-term options because each will take time to obtain.

Apply For Housing – Single adults or families

Another secondary housing option for anyone needing to find placement following the Imelda floods is applying at a housing authority. The only issue with applying at Houston Housing Authority is the waitlist was full before this week’s floods.

An alternative to waiting nearly 24 months with Houston Housing Authority is applying at an outside housing program. You can apply for housing with any housing authority in any city, county or state in the US. The smaller the population, the shorter the wait for you.

Note: The Houston Housing Authority waitlist is LONG, but consider contacting them anyway for assistance. They may offer a special housing program for survivors of Imelda. Doesn’t hurt to call. You will find their number and Harris County Housing Authority listed below.

Here is a list of housing authorities that are in Texas that may have shorter waitlists than Houston.

Houston Apartment Locators – single adults and families

Finding a suitable apartment is hard enough without a major flood like Imelda, although if anyone can help you find a new place to stay it’s a Houston apartment locator. Apartment locators cans sometimes help individuals with broken leases and evictions. To have an apartment locator search for a new place to live is free.

Below is a list of Houston apartment locators:

Imelda Flood Food Resources

It may take a day or so for these food pantries to reopen, but hopefully, most will be open by next week.

Your main resource for food should be the Houston Food Bank, SE Texas Food Bank (Beaumont) and Galveston County Foof Bank. These food banks will likely start providing food to the communities the fastest.

Free Furniture In Houston

If your home or apartment took on water, there is a good chance your furniture was ruined. If this is the case and you need a new couch, fridge or some other piece of furniture see our guided titled 15 Ways To Find Free Furniture In Houston.

Baby Items

Our guide called Where To Find Free Diaper Banks provides that as well as resources for baby items should you need those following the Imelda floods here in Texas.

Imelda Survey

The Imelda Survey is not an assistance application but rather a tool for assessing what the community needs are. In time you will see organizations offering special assistance for those impacted by Imelda. Once the resources become available those organizations will begin contacting people who completed this Imelda Survey.

Conclusion

While there will be no shortage of assistance from non-profit agencies in the coming days, there will also be lots of red tape, lines, and sign-in sheets for you to complete. For this reason, I strongly urge you to TRY reaching out to family members for help.

If they can’t help or you don’t have family members to contact that’s completely understandable. You can follow up with any of the resources above or contact 211 Texas (dial 211 or 877.541.7905 on your phone).

211 Texas can provide you with referrals to food, health, and housing in your area.

Whatever your situation is and whenever you are located from Braeswood Bayou to Beaumont good luck with your recovery and God bless!
