42 States Offering Summer P EBT Benefits In 2023
In this community resource, you will learn about 42 states that are providing summer P EBT benefits to eligible households with children in 2023.
The P EBT benefit is a summer food program that helps families with children who would normally receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. This summer benefit can be used to purchase food at participating retailers.
If you have a child that receives free lunch or even reduced-price meals at school, continue reading to see if your state is offering the benefit and how you can enroll in the program to receive your one-time $120 payment per eligible child.
What is Summer P EBT? (Food Stamps)
Summer P EBT is a program that helps low-income families buy food during the summer months when their children are out of school.
The program provides a debit card that can be used to purchase food at participating stores. Summer P EBT is open to families with children who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at school. Families can receive pandemic EBT benefits even if they do not receive SNAP (food stamp) benefits.
The goal of P-EBT is to help families with children who would have qualified for free or reduced lunches while attending school but are unable to do so because to COVID-19 restrictions. This benefit is only available to households with students in school who were eligible for free or reduced lunch.
What Is The Difference Between P EBT And Emergency Allotment (Extra Food Stamps)?
Both food stamp programs are designed to help families in need during a federal public health emergency, but there are some key differences between them.
Pandemic EBT benefits are a one-time payment (typically $120 per eligible child), whereas extra food stamps benefits are paid monthly.
In order to receive extra food stamps (in many cases $95 per month), you will need to qualify for SNAP benefits in your state. P-EBT does not require you to have food stamps. Your child simply needs to be enrolled in a free or reduced lunch program at their school.
Eligibility Requirements For Summer P-EBT
To receive P-EBT benefits, you will need to live in a state that is participating in the food assistance program and meet the following eligibility requirements:
- You must have a school-aged child who is enrolled in a school that is closed or had a delayed start.
- The school your child is enrolled in must be a provider of the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program.
- Your state must offer P-EBT benefits.
If you meet these P-EBT eligibility requirements, you may be able to receive benefits to help cover the cost of meals while schools are closed. For more information on P-EBT, please visit your state’s P-EBT website. Below is a table with telephone numbers and links to food stamp programs in each state.
Most Eligible Households Will Receive The $120 P-EBT Payment
Most states offer $120 for Summer 2023 P EBT benefits. However, there are some states that offer up to $188 in pandemic EBT benefits.
You can check with your state’s social services department to see if you qualify for the maximum benefits.
How To Apply For Summer P EBT 2023
There is no website where you can apply for summer P EBT benefits. To apply for P EBT you will need to submit an application for free lunch or reduced-price meals with your child’s school district.
In order to be eligible for P-EBT benefits, students must be enrolled in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). If your child receives free or reduced lunch they may be eligible for pandemic EBT.
Enrollment in the NSLP is done through an application process with the student’s school so you will need to contact their school if you are not currently receiving pandemic EBT.

Hi Barbara! These are federal funds and if Tennessee is not offering this summer PEBT it may be because the Tennessee governor declined to accept or use the federal funds that they were given 4 this food assistance program. Each governor has the right to use federal dollars in any way that they see fit. For example there are many “red” states that have stopped the extra food stamp or emergency allotment benefits program. They chose to use those funds in other ways. When it comes to Health and Human services programs each state will run their program differently. This happens all the time here in Texas when somebody comes here from Louisiana or California and is surprised that they can’t get adult Medicaid. I understand the frustration though.
If I get food stamps do I have to apply for free lunch
For PEBT yes your child would need to be signed up for free lunch at school.
