Step 1. Visit DMV.org
DMV.org is a life saver. They offer step by step instructions on obtaining legal documents like voter registration cards, social security card, and even state IDs.
Step one is to visit DMV.org.
Step 2. Find the Blue Map
After clicking the link you’ll want to scroll down the page and look for the blue map of the United States.
At this point, you can use the map or the “Select Your State” drop down to locate the state you live in. Once you find your state click it and meet us in Step 3.
Step 3. Read Up On The Details Of Your State
After clicking your state, you will be taken to a page that displays all the details of obtaining a state ID.
These details include things like:
- The cost of a state ID (between $9 – $18 depending on the state)
- A printable application for a state ID
- Clarification on whether you can apply for a state ID via mail, online or in person.
- Links to listings of DMV offices in your state
- Documents needed to obtain a new ID or renew an old one

Many states require you to visit your local DMV to obtain a state ID. If this is the case we found it easier to just back out of DMV.org and simply google “DMV in Colorado (or whatever your state is)”.
Once you have located the nearest DMV you can take your completed state ID application or complete one at the DMV. You’ll have plenty of time trust us.
