Where To Find Adult and Pediatric Speech Therapy In Houston

Your ability to communicate with others is an important life skill.

Whether we are talking about a child who was born with a speech disorder or an adult who suffered a speech impairment as a result of injury its important to correct these problems.

One way to correct an existing speech disorder is by visiting a speech therapist. In this guide I will now only show you where you can find these speech therapist, but you’ll also learn the following:

  • What is speech therapy?
  • Who performs speech therapy?
  • How do you know if you or your child needs speech therapy?
  • What happens during a speech therapy session?
  • Does insurance cover speech therapy?

As you can see there is a lot to cover so let’s get started.

What Is Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy is the treatment of communication problems and speech disorders.

Some of the techniques that are used to correct communication problems include:

  • Articulation Therapy
  • Language Intervention Activities
  • Other techniques depending on the speech or language disorder

Who Performs Speech Therapy?

Speech Therapy is performed by a Speech Therapist or Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP).  All state laws regarding a speech therapy license vary, but most require that they have at least a master’s degree. When you combine undergrad and graduate school, the number of years it takes to become a speech therapist is typically 7 years

Who Needs Speech Therapy?

Both children and adults can benefit from speech pathology.

Children may need therapy for speech disorders that develop in childhood. Those disorders can include

  • Autism
  • Articulation problems
  • Feeding or swallowing disorders
  • Respiratory problems
  • Cognitive or developmental delays
  • A hearing impairment
  • Brain injury

Adults typically need speech therapy after a brain injury or stroke. Other conditions that would require speech therapy for adults include:

  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Swallowing disorders

What Happens In A Speech Therapy Session?

A speech pathology session for your child can take place in a classroom, group or one on one setting. The activities in the session will depend on your child’s age.

Here are things to expect in a child’s speech therapy session:

  • Speech therapist will use books, pictures or objects to stimulate language development.
  • Demonstrations of syllables and sounds
  • Speech therapist provide homework for the child/parent to work on at home

For adults the exercises are different and may involve

  • Breathing exercises
  • Sessions to strengthen oral muscles
  • Conversational exercises to improve communication
  • Using speech therapy apps, workbooks or flash cards

Does Insurance Cover Speech Therapy?

Insurance typically covers speech pathology, however your plan may only cover specific disorders

Here’s an example.

An insurance plan may provide speech pathology for children who have a diagnosis of Autism, but not cover speech therapy for a developmental disorder.

Because of this, it’s important to know the name of your child’s disorder and ask your insurance provider if your plan offers speech therapy for that disorder.

For adults, it’s the same. Speech therapy is generally covered if you have an acute illness or injury that requires therapy sessions to rehabilitate. Problems arise when the speech impairment is not associated with an acute illness or injury.

While there is no guarantee that your insurance provider will cover a specific disorder, it should cover a speech “evaluation” or “assessment”. The evaluation can help you determine if there is a diagnosis. If so, you can present the results to your insurance provider to see if you (or your child) qualifies for speech therapy. Even if there is no diagnosis the speech therapist can suggest a treatment plan to follow.

Note: If your child is younger than 3 years old you can contact Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) for help getting an evaluation. To start this process call Harris Center at 713.970.7000.

Bottom line is you should contact your insurance company to learn which disorders qualify for speech therapy coverage.

Conclusion

Whether there is an adult or child in your life that is having trouble communicating, the first thing you want to do is have them evaluated.

There are plenty of options for speech evaluations (many were found in this guide), however here is an easy list to get you started:

  1. Call the telephone number on the back of your insurance card to have a speech evaluation performed. Most insurance companies will at least cover a speech evaluation. If there is a disorder that’s discovered, your insurance will be able to tell you if they cover speech therapy.
  2. Use the list of Houston speech therapy clinics above, because most will provide speech evaluation. The clinics above are separated via map and area of town they are located so you should have no issues finding a provider close to your home.
  3. Lastly, if your child attends a Houston KIPP charter school they can assist you with testing for speech therapy. Even if your child does not attend KIPP someone in special education department at HISD, Katy ISD or any other local school district can help you start the process.

Best of luck to you and your family.
