What Is A Food Stamp Household?
A food stamp household is everyone who lives together in one home that also purchases and prepares food together. For instance, if you are a single mom with 2 children under 22 years old, you would have a SNAP household of 3. This is because you purchase and prepare food for 3 people in the household.
Who Is Included In A Food Stamp Household?
Anyone in your home that eats the food that you buy at the grocery store is a part of your SNAP household.
If someone is staying with you on a temporary basis and buys their own food, then they would not be a part of your food stamp household.
An example is anyone who had to move in with family or friends during the pandemic. If that person continues to work and has their own income that they use to buy food, then they would not be considered in your SNAP household.
Rules For SNAP Households With Seniors 60 Years And Older
Here are the rules for food stamp households if there is a senior who is 60 years and older:
If there is a senior citizen who is 60+ years old and they cannot buy or prepare their food, they may be a separate food stamp household. This is true if the other family members they are loving with have a very low income.
If you make at or below the figures below, then a 60+ year old may be considered a separate SNAP household.
Household Size | 48 States + Washington DC, Guam, Virgin Islands | Alaska | Hawaii |
1 | $1771 | $2213 | $2038 |
2 | $2396 | $2994 | $2756 |
3 | $3020 | $3775 | $3474 |
4 | $3644 | $4556 | $4191 |

8 | $6141 | $7680 | $7062 |
Each Additional Member | $625 | $781 | $718 |
Conclusion
Your SNAP household is made up of the family members that you purchase and prepare food for. Whoever you grocery shop for in your home is a part of your food stamp household.
If someone is staying with you on a temporary basis who purchases their own food, do not include them on your food stamp application.
