EDG Number: What Is It and What Does It Mean for You?
In this community resource guide, you will learn what an EDG number is and how it is used to determine the EBT deposit schedule in Texas.
Even if you receive Texas SNAP benefits, you may not be familiar with something called an EDG number. It’s an important number that is used to determine when you receive your food stamps in Texas. It’s entirely possible that the paperwork that was mailed to you with your EDG is long gone!
If you lost your approval letter from SNAP don’t worry, you can still get your EDG number. Continue reading to better understand what exactly an EDG number is and how it determines what day you receive your food stamp benefits.
What Is An EDG Number?
EDG stands for eligibility determination group. This is a number that is assigned to you by Texas Health and Human Services when you apply for government benefits like food stamps TANF or Medicaid. Typically this is a 9 or 10-digit number.
What Is An EDG Number Used For?
Think of your EDG number as a case number. Texas Health and Human Services uses it to track your case in their system.
The main way that you will use your EDG number is to determine what day of the month you will receive your food stamp benefits. In Texas, food stamps are distributed over a 15-day period.
Because it is not possible to give out food stamps to every SNAP recipient in Texas on the same day, they deposit benefits into your food stamp accounts every day beginning on the 1st of the month and ending on the 15th of the month. This is also known as the “EBT deposit schedule”.
How Do They Determine The EBT Deposit Schedule In Texas?
The EBT deposit schedule is based on the last digit of your EDG number.
Below is a table that explains what day of the month you will receive your Texas food stamps based on the last digit of your eligibility determination group.
Last EDG Digit | Day You Receive Food Stamp Benefits |
0 | 1st of the month |
1 | 3rd of the month |
2 | 5th of the month |
3 | 6th of the month |
4 | 7th of the month |
5 | 9th of the month |
6 | 11th of the month |
7 | 12th of the month |
8 | 13th of the month |
9 | 15th of the month |

Hi Suzanna, you could try contacting the Texas Ombudsman’s office. They handle complaints about Texas health and human services. They particulary deal w Medicaid and long term care complaints, but this might be a good starting point to see who or if they can change your EDG number to get benefits sooner.
